RFTC is composed by 4 unions and 14 Primary cooperatives, this Federation is the one of the strongest federation nationwide, it employ 700 country wide. In terms of vehicles, Cooperatives dominate this sector with a market share of 67% (around 2,400 vehicles), In average more than 170 vehicles per Cooperative, this is more than the largest transoprt private company has (Kigali Bus Services Limited with around 120 vehicles), Nyabugogo and Remera Transport Cooperative are the largest of its kind with around 400 vehicles each.
As accomplishments RFTC did the following :
(i) Shareholder of RITCO and Gasabo investment company, (ii) Introduction of Tap & Go Card for cashless payment, (iii) Wifi available on selected buses, (iv) accessible buses for people with disabilities, (v) establishment of SACCO for members, (vi) pledge of 100 million in Agaciro development fund, construction of bus station of Kabuga, Bugesera, Musanze, Kayonza, Karongi, Muhanga, Nyagatare and Gicumbi in partnership with their respective Districts, (vii) Distribution 20 cows to survivors of genocide against the Tutsi, house for vulnerable at Kicukiro and at Zaza.
About the needs challenges, there are Many actors in the transport sector and The federation regularly charges different service and membership fees to its members, which often creates problems if the reasons behind the fees charged are not well explained
To solve gaps, necessities are summarized as follow :
• Training in governance and management for committees and staff (willing to pay a percentage)
• Training also on transport at international level
• Support in business planning preparations
• Advocacy that federation and other partners let primary cooperative be independent if they wish
• Advocacy for participation in meeting decision making affecting Transport cooperatives.
